Bachata Practice: Listen First, Then Dance

A good bachata practice session starts before the first turn. Put on a song, leave the choreography aside for a moment, and listen. Can you follow its pulse without looking at anyone else? Can you hear when the singer pauses or the music changes direction?

Start with a track you enjoy and can follow comfortably. Walk through your basic step, keeping your movement small. When you lose the timing, pause and find it again. Repeating a familiar song can be more useful than rushing through a long playlist.

On the next listen, notice the guitar phrases and the spaces between the vocals. Try a simpler movement when the song settles, then add energy when the arrangement opens up. You do not need a new move for every sound. Sometimes staying with the basic step lets you hear more.

Practicing with a partner? Agree on a comfortable pace and keep the connection gentle. Leave complicated combinations for another round. The goal is to move together and enjoy the music.

For your next session, explore This Is Nandy Versátil on Spotify. Listen to La Chucky (Mi Mami Chula), Dando Vueltas Fumando and Amor Amor, and notice which songs make you want to move. Choose one, give it a full listen, and then dance it your way.
